We had a situation last week with one of the Mom's who has a baby in NICU
was admitted to the hospital 2 times in past 6 days for engorgement. Her
physician ordered Pitocin IV (our pharmacy advised not to give it IM). The
first time it was primary engorgement at 4 days. She was using a drug
store pump that was ineffective. (Of course she was advised to rent before
leaving the hospital). She had small firm breasts and I worked with her
with the usual treatments, and got the milk moving. The second time the
milk flowed readily with the pump long before the Pitocin was given. Has
anyone ever heard of giving Pitocin for this? I certainly have not found
any literature supporting this. Does Pitocin act like Oxytocin in the
breast? I was unable to speak to the Physician and he is not the type that
would take my advice anyway. How tragic for the mother; hospital
admission, IV's, for engorgement!!
