Well, there are certainly male ob/gyn and they have never given birth.
Haha. Ditto female ob/gyn. Also, pediatricians who have never been
parents. So, I will say that LCs do not have to have breastfed to do
a wonderful job of helping women breastfeed.

I think...maybe not a bad thing. A nurse who had a scheduled
induction with her epidural may not be as supportive for the non
intervention oriented laboring momma. (Personal experience as a doula
shows this is a reality: Nurse to mother: Oh, you want a natural
birth? Are you nuts? I had my epidural when I walked in the door!
Who wants a natural birth when we have a way out of it?) A
pediatrician who let her baby cry it out for hours may not see it as
an issue to tell a mom who wants to cosleep that her kid needs to get
over it and be independent. So, it seems to me, that when it comes to
maternal and child health there is just as much 'science' as there is
'opinion'. (and sometimes much more opinion than science from the
health care providers when it comes to parenting options and birth
choices) I wonder if then it would maybe not be so bad for the
help/support/education whatever to come from someone who doesn't have
a clue of been there done that and brings only knowledge minus the
"this worked for me, so it is right for everyone" that seems to be
very common in birth and breastfeeding.
