I agree with Karleen completely. I am seeing a dumbing down of professional
knowledge and skills in my area as it is. People pass the exam but have no
clue about IBCLC Standards of Practice and our Code of Ethics. This has
created a situation where parents, hospitals and HCPs do not value
"lactation consultants." I have heard horror stories of people getting BC
hours in ways that don't prepare them to be professional lactation
consultants but because they can pass the exam, they become one. I would
like to see our profession strengthened by required course work that
includes an internship (meaning college course work like RNs have). I would
like to see the exam cover our professional standards and ethics. I would
like the IBLCE to check people's BC hours and how they got them more
thoroughly.

Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
