I have written about this little boy before and I have gotten several
messages, but now I am needing more help. 9 month old boy nursed well first
4 months, mom's main complaint was that he was fussy, but ate well, grew
well. Started on solids 4 months, began having bloody stools. MD said
breast milk allergy. Visited a gastroenterologist who told her it was breast
milk allergy and baby would need to be on special formula. Mom changed her
diet, took out dairy and soy, wheat and corn, stools became almost normal,
baby grew but slowly.
3 weeks ago, baby began having bloody stools again. It was a mystery why,
but then dad said baby had eaten some cat food. Baby began to lose a few
ounces of weight a week, looked anemic, had little energy, refused all other
foods except frequent small nursings. I encouraged mom to take baby back to
gastroenterologist, who did a sigmoidoscopy on Friday afternoon. He also
gave the baby some blood as he was anemic. Kept the baby overnight and told
mom on Saturday morning not to ever nurse again, and make the baby drink the
predigested formula. Parents have been trying to comply, baby is on ivs,
getting cortisone, and they are forcing him to drink the predigested
formula, which he mainly spits out. Within a few m inutes of drinking it,
he has bloody diarrhea again. He has been crying and throwing his head back
on the bed and fighting this for a whole day now. Mom is pumping her milk
with little success, due to stress I guess. He is not in the hospital where
I work, and I don't know exactly what to say to help this mom. Please let
me know if you know anything which would help him, or have any ideas.
Thanks very much. (MD says he will remain in hospital until he is eating the
formula well).
