Regarding the mother who was told to put a scoop of formula in two ounces of
breast milk. This seems very excessive to me and could be dangerous for the
baby due to an overload of some of the nutrients. What is normal for formula
is a scoop of powder into 2 ounces of WATER.

What is being done down here is that premie or heart defect babies (upon
discharge to the home) are told to put 1 teaspoon formula into 2 ounces of
human milk. Some put 1/2 teaspoon of formula into 2 ounces of human milk.
Very rarely are premies sent home on "just" human milk. Even the ones who
seem to have a good weight gain are told to do this. I have seen premie
babies that gain 12 ounces a week on this diet and are very round and fat
and sleepy. Most mothers then will not breastfeed because of the
supplementation "needs" of the baby. WIC is usually buying special formula
for these babies, too.
