. Is there ever a reason NOT to put a baby to
breast?

Only if the baby is having difficulties, such as breathing issues. We
should be paying attention to ALL baby cues right from the start (not just
feeding cues). If a baby is grunting, with a retracting chest when he
breathes and his nostrils are flaring as if to say, "It's all I can do to
take a breath right now," then we need to wait.

But since this baby being discussed was "open mouthed" and obviously
searching for food, sounds like all was well.
