Have mom's permission to post. Mom called with following problem. She has
a 6 week old infant, pumped 16 oz prior to CT scan for today. Was given IV
Iodine contrast dye. Tech was unsure how long to go before resuming
breastfeeding. So she called me to see if I knew. Only info I could find in Hale's
was for I-125, I-131,I-123 which is radioactive iodine. I am unsure if this
is the same thing as IV contrast used in CT scans. The info for the
radioactive iodine was bleak, saying to abstain from bf for upwards of 50 days +. I
find this hard to believe is the case for a CT scan, but I do not want to risk
damage to the infant's thyroid. Does ANYONE know if these are one and the
same, and if this is indeed true? A friend is wet nursing this evening, and I
advised to go ahead and pump and dump until I had more solid info (hopefully
from you fine folks). I informed her that she may have to resort to ABM
tonight until we sort this out, while this doesn't make her terribly happy, she
understands and is willing to do what is necessary for the good of her
infant. Hence some input ASAP is needed. I pray that we are erring on the side of
caution and that she will be able to resume bf in the morning. BTW, the
info I obtained was in Hale's Medication and Mother's Milk 2004 edition, page
420. If I was looking in the wrong spot, would someone please tell me.
