Here's a scary story. I'm not the primary doc involved in this case, but I
have been following on the sidelines. (Many have been concerned that it would
get out to that "pro-bf doc" for good reason.) In the nutshell, 2 week old
admitted with raging meningitis. Put on the big-gun antibiotics. Getting
worse, now has brain abcesses. Organism is very very rare. Where did it come
from!? Sage wisdom neonatologist remembers that this has been found in
powdered formula. Suddenly everyone is very nervous, local health involved,
peds infectious disease, state offficials, etc. The formula is collected from
household, quietly. Results of testing: supposedly cultured same organism
from same lot # as can in question but not out of that can specifically.
Therefore no direct evidence of wrong doing, "don't know what to make of
it?!" Lot # pulled from store shelves but NO public announcement. Hummmm.
Infant is severely damaged with very poor prognosis.
Hope the ABM reps out there are listening. Sure sure ABM and breastmilk are
equivalent. HA! How do you spell UNETHICAL?
