A client, 43 year old multip (2nd baby, 1st baby at age 19) is exclusively
pumping for her 4 week old (long story, involving NICU admission and bad
advice in the hospital). She started with a copious milk supply (pumping 7
oz at a feed) with an Ameda Purely Yours. She skipped one pumping in the
middle of one night and ended up with mastitis, which immediately tanked her
supply. Despite switching to a Symphony, and adding herbs, she has been
unable to increase her supply back to anywhere near what it was - at best
she can get one ounce between both breasts. She finally decided to see what
hand expressing would do, and managed to get over an ounce from each breast
in about 15 minutes per side, particularly by expressing very close to the
nipple. She is finding it difficult to catch the milk and tiring to use her
hands. Can anyone suggest what hand pump or electric pump might best serve
her, given what she's discovered about where to apply hand pressure to get
the most milk? I'm at a total loss as to what to suggest. Mom is obviously
supplementing, but would like to continue providing as much breastmilk as
possible.
Thanks so much,
Julie
