I have had a number of emails about the new formula from Mead Johnson,
Enfamil RestFull. The new formula RestFull from Mead Johnson is the
exact same formulation as Enfamil AR. I called Mead Johnson and they
confirmed that this is simply the same formula with a different label
and indication for use. Enfamil AR is for reflux and has added rice
starch which of course RestFull does too.

My concern stems from a number of issues, especially that of the
possibility of increasing the risk for SIDS. When I asked Mead Johnson
if studies had looked at this possibility, the answer was that they had
not.

There has been much research done on adding ingredients to infant
formula to make AM and PM feedings, specifically by adding tryptophan
to infant formula. Tryptophan functions as a biochemical precursor for
serotonin (a neurotransmitter), synthesized via tryptophan hydroxylase.
Serotonin, in turn, can be converted to melatonin, both of which affect
sleep-wake rhythms and act as a mild sedative. Other research looked at
adding alpha-lactalbumin to formula because it has a high concentration
of tryptophan and infants fed these experimental formulations fell
asleep faster and stayed asleep longer than those infants without the
added alpha-lactalbumin in their feedings.

I would direct complaints to the FDA, asking about the safety of
inducing sleep in infants during the high risk period for SIDS.
