Tried and true hint from 3 generations of our family:

Make sure the washer's not too crowded, or that someone's not being too
generous with detergent or softener. Possibly better to use a second
rinse to be sure, then add 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to the last
rinse. (I use it on every load of laundry. Cheap, and good for permanent
press too.)

(Or at least to towels, bras, underwear, nightgowns, sheets or anything
else that might possibly touch the skin when the pores are open from a
warm bath, or even minimal perspiring, which can reactivate any leftover
laundry detergent or softeners left in the cloth. Simply great for baby
clothes and sheets, etc.)

No softener sheets in a dryer. Smell goes away when dried in dryer or
fresh air.

Definitely worth rewashing some clean towels, undies, bras, etc. then
taking a bath and using the treated clothes for quick relief if this was
the problem.
