I'm not so averse anymore to OKing bottle feeding with some families who really have a hard time with all the other ways. I think what it comes down to is a good assessment of the "whole" picture and deciding how to feed the baby, protect the supply and have it be satisfying for all involved- meaning the parents and baby. Our job is to give support and help them along safely. I've seen finger feeding backfire- the baby waits for that finger and will do nothing else. They never open their mouths wide enough. It all depends on the situation. Bottles in the hospital shouldn' t be necessary but after discharge it can be a good tool.
