One of the things that seems to be a little mind-boggling to all of us is the
fact that the FDA does not approve infant formula. I have written a short
description and rebuttal to formula salesmen's claims about their products that
you can freely download from the NABA web site at:
http://www.naba-breastfeeding.org/images/DHA%20article.pdf

This gives an explanation of the GRAS process and a history of what happened
regarding the review of these formulas. The Institute of Medicine has
conducted a two year study of the safety of the addition of ingredients new to infant
formula and the process by which this occurs. The project was to have ended
this month. When I contacted them, they said that the report would not be ready
until February of 2004--hmmmm. Not one of their meetings was open to the
public, there has been no public input into this report, the documents given to the
committee to consider were written by an industry front group, and I believe
that Valerie researched the industry ties among the committee members- right
Valerie?

Between formula that makes babies "smarter" and toxic breast milk headlines,
we seem to be yet again on the defensive.
