I do agree with Catherine Genna's posting of June 5 on how
fortunate we are on the one hand to have the safety net of
technology there for us, but on the other hand, how technology
compromises breastfeeding for many. I really do. On the other
hand, the whole business of birth interventions tends to drive
me really crazy and I lose my perspective. Doctors intervene MUCH
too much with routine, unnecessary "technology" which in the end
prolongs labor, opens the door wider for more dangerous
interventions, eventually compromising more than bfing, often
maternal and fetal health or life. I do not think that homebirth
is for everyone - far from it! But I shudder every time I talk
with local midwives to hear about yet another routine technology
added to the delivery protocol. Yuck! Judy Knopf
