>I am a professional librarian who lurks on your listserv, and an avid breastfeeding supporter (Henry is 2.5 and still nursing at all hours). I am not a lactation professional (I apologize for posting to your list without the necessary credentials), but I am hoping to get your advice.

>I am working on a library subject guide (a suggested list of books, magazine articles, websites, local resources) for the public on the topic of "Feeding Your Baby". Despite my personal bias towards bf, I must provide a balanced informational look at bf and formula feeding in my subject guide.

>Unfortunately, the websites that I have found about formula feeding, or about breastfeeding or formula feeding, all offend me. They all say 'breast is best', but then give misinformation about breastfeeding, or give weak reasons to formula feed.

My first suggestion is that, rather than 'balanced', look for
'evidence-based.' You wouldn't be giving information about travelling in
cars that mentions not putting babies in car-seats, just for balance.

Good breastfeeding information is available from:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/bfinfo.html (La Leche League)
http://www.lalecheleaguecanada.ca/ (for info. on Canadian LLL Groups)
http://www.karengromada.com/
http://www.wiessinger.baka.com/
http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/newman.shtml
http://www.drjaygordon.com/bf/index.htm
http://www.breastfeeding.com/
http://www.promom.org/

... and lots of other sites created by lactnetters who may not feel it
is right to promote their own products. (They can send them to me and
I'll send them on; no vested interest for me -- I'm just a volunteer.)

I'd invite all librarians to check out the La Leche League website to
find out what books should be priorities for purchase.
http://www.lalecheleague.org/catalog.html
All these books have been checked out carefully for their accuracy and
for their consistent approach in providing mothers with support and
information.
