Hi, Anita:  How wonderful that you've been asked to talk with teen girls
about breastfeeding!  Maybe next time you could talk with the guys!  I
would approach this subject by discussion, asking them what they've heard
about breastfeeding.  A good opener - who's heard breastfeeding hurts?  I
ask this in adult prenatal breastfeeding classes and virtually every hand
goes up (mine included) and a lively discussion ensues.  Most of what teens
know about breastfeeding is hearsay and myths.  It would be great if you
could include the teens' mothers in the discussion as it's been my
experience it's the girl's mother who "decides" whether her daughter will
nurse or not and how long she'll do it.  I spent several years working thru
the local health dept with high-risk pregnant/parenting teens and they
taught me a whole lot on how they perceive pregnancy, parenting, and
breastfeeding.  a really neat population to work with!  Like my own kids, I
felt they help keep me young!  Have fun with your presentation! If you have
time, a short video (they love visuals) on breastfeeding would be good.
