Hi,
I am putting together a presentation for an RN skills day on the nutrition
needs of the newborn in the first 24-48hrs. It seems as though the medical
community is stuck on hard numbers, (the infant has not eaten in 4hrs we
must give ABM or check a blood glucose). I am interested in how others get
away from this fear of hard data. Is this obsession as prevalent in
countries outside the US? If so, what do you do to educate HCP or moms on
the nutrition needs and possible low glucose levels? I am trying to develop
tables or handouts on signs and symptoms of when ABM is medically warranted.

My goals are to show the need for babes to stay with moms more and aids to
teach moms why and to increase the amount of exclusive BF. (while slipping
in the evils of ABM) We may have a high rate of BF, but not exclusive BF and
the staff do not seem to realize how this decreases the length of BF. And
yes we still have bags and a contract for free ABM.
