I have been wondering about this for quite some time now. My mother is a
fan of "The Zone" diet by Dr. Barry Sears and she said that one of his
books says that nobody gets enough DHA in their diets because we don't
eat grass-fed beef or fish that are not grain-fed. Apparently grain-fed
beef and fish are alleged to be lacking in the right amounts or types of
fatty acids that we truly need. She also reports that he also says that
one possible cause of ADD in children is that a mother's DHA supplies are
depleted after the first pregnancy and that mothers need to rebuild their
supplies with fish oil supplements or their subsequent children will not
get enough DHA during pregnancy and nursing and will be more likely to
develop ADD. She reports that he further says that run-of-the-mill fish
oil supplements do not provide the "right kind" of fatty acide either
(because most commercially-raised dish are grain-fed) and that only
"pharmaceutical-grade" fish oil supplements are truly adequate. He sells
his own brand of such supplements.

This is all second-hand from my mother so please be sure to check out the
book and don't quote me. I believe it's not the first The Zone book but
a sequel that has something about DHA in the title. HTH.
