Hi I am an IBCLC in New York and I am getting questions about the insect
repellant the Health Dept. is using to control the mosquito population in
some sections of New York. I am concerned with all the areas and how the
spraying effects Westchester County. I called Posion Control and I was told
Westchester is spraying: Anvil the chemical name is sumithrin the class of
pestacide is pyrethroid. My questions are 1) If mom is exposed is the
chemical present is breastmilk? 2) Does exposure mean being out side when
it is sprayed or does it mean touching anything that has been sprayed out
side like a car, lawn furniture, the mail box? 3) What is the effects on
the new born, especially one with a respirtory problem? 4) How long should
one wait before venturing out side after spraying? Poision control was not
very helpful and said there was no info on this chemical and breastmilk. I
was also told many times that it was the safest chemical on the market for
erratication of the mosquito population. I hope some one out there can
answer all these questions. I am sorry this is so long!
