Just wanted to share my own experience - my first child refused
solids until well over 12 months. (Drove me crazy for a long time...). He
was in the 90th percentile... not a little one - and on breastmilk only.
When he was 9-10 mo. old, he had low iron. He refused the iron drops (major
traumatic event in his eyes). Someone suggested I take iron supplements
myself. I did, and next visit he was no longer low in iron.
Not only did he do fine on brm. alone during that time, but once I
introduced dairy products in his diet after age 1 he had repeated ear
infections. It never occured to me then that there was a correlation (I
found out later that he was definately allergic to any and all dairy - even
the hidden dairy in a hamburger bun). However, when he had his ear
infections, he would stop eating all solids the entire time. All he wanted
to to was nurse. What a shock at age 2 when he gained a pound during an ear
infection from breastmilk alone! (Boy, did he nurse alot!)
I now wonder if his refusal of solids was allergy related - it turns
out that he also has a problem with gluten, egg and citrus. Although he is
still a very picky eater at age 11 (just like his father!).
