Thanks to all who responded to my very quick query. To clarify: the
midwife (nb I apologise to north americans for assuming you would realise
that a baby whose midwife phoned would be under medical care) phoned me, not
the mother, m/w did not know the answer. The mother is still in hospital,
and the lesion in the baby's mouth triggered the concern that the baby might
have herpes -- the baby is 3 days old -- the mother has no symptoms, this is
a bolt out of the blue. There are tests on-going, the question was should
the baby continue to breastfeed? It seems to me that the question was then,
if the baby does have herpes (and I take the point absolutely that it might
turn out to be something else) then does this ABSOLUTELY mean the mother has
herpes? If so, then I can't see any issue with breastfeeding -- but remain
open to education on this specific point.

thanks and sorry again for not being clear I was in the middle of a row at
the time).
