In my experience, breast refusal after bottle exposure is most likely to
occur if the baby has not figured out how to get milk at the breast, or
if breastfeeding is otherwise frustrating (very fast flow, or low milk
supply). I've had moms go back to work one to two weeks after giving
birth, and maintain breastfeeding well in to toddlerhood. They just need
the best help possible to get breastfeeding off to a really good start.
It's best if the bottle is not offered until a few days before mom goes
back to work if it's this early, or after 2-4 weeks of good
breastfeeding if mom has a 6 week maternity leave. Mom can pump before
that to start stockpiling extra milk and to learn to let down to the
pump as well as to the baby.
