<2. what is the difference between a galactocele, mastitis, and a clogged
duct?
A clogged duct occurs in an area of the breast, that for whatever reason,
doesn't get adequate drainage when baby nurses (tight bra, infrequent
nursing or long periods between nursing, awkward positioning, etc). The
duct "clogs" and lets milk build up behind it. It is a term familarily used
by LLLLs and LCs. It responds to frequent nursing, warm compresses,
sometimes gentle pressure behind the clog while baby is nursing. Usually no
fever present....>
Pat has given a great explanation for all these questions. I'd just like to
add that in Australia we would use the term "blocked duct" rather than
"clogged duct". To me, clogged sounds like it is filled with some thick
material, which isn't necessarily so. In my mind, milk is just building up
in that area (maybe due to pressure from tight bra, mother's fingers,
sleeping on full breast, wearing a sling too long, seat belt, etc).
Anyway, it's just worth knowing that if you are reading anything written by
an Aussie you may see "blocked duct" , which means the same as "clogged
duct".
This reminds of a great post, several years ago (?), by one of the Pats
about a duck on a swimming pool....
(I just did a search for duck in the archives and got 35 hits but not the
one I'm thinking of - perhaps some-else can remember that moment of
madness!)
