Mississippi will have the first quintuplits born in the state next week.  The
mother is very interested in nursing her babies.  She is 29 years old and has
had one previous baby 4 years ago.  As of last week the EDC was 5/30/99.  The
babies (I don't know what sex) weigh approximately 1 lb. 2 oz, 1 lb 12 oz, 1
lb. 14 oz., 1 lb. 15 oz. and 2 lbs.  She will be provided with a piston driven
electric breast pump with dual accessory kit and lactation consultants, and we
hope (we haven't made the referral yet) a very knowledgeable family practice
MD who has a lactation clinic here in Jackson, Mississippi.)

To confound the problem of breastfeeding quints .. the mother had breast
reduction surgery when she was 16 years old on her right breast.  Her left
breast was smaller.  She attempted to breastfeed a her first baby, but was
discouraged by the hospital and was told she didn't have enough milk and the
baby lost weight and was admitted to the NICU.  (I'm not sure that there
wasn't more to this than the mother remembers)  She did remember that the
right breast never did get engorged but her left breast did, when she abruptly
discontinued pumping for her baby in the NICU.    3 years ago she discovered a
lump in her right breast and a lumpectomy was performed, removing a
non-malignant tumor.  She was told it was a fatty tumor.    She also remember
visiting with a lactation consultant in New Orleans, Louisiana many years ago
(I'm not sure if before surgery or after) and was told that she had pear
shaped breast.   A home visit has been set for Monday to assess incision
sites, etc.

What do you think?  Thank you for your help, advice, encouragment.  I
attempted to search the  archives for multiple births and breastfeeding and
was unsuccessful.  I know that it has been discussed  before.    Camille
