I too was interviewed by Newsweek for background information on the new SIDS
policy from AAP. The Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition had contacted
Newsweek along with many other media outlets to see if we could get coverage of
the other side of this issue. I gave the reporter Nancy's name and Larry
Gartner's name to help offset some of the ridiculous outcomes that we have been
seeing around here. We have nurses in hospitals giving out pacifiers to every
parent telling them a fairy tale of how this will protect their baby from
SIDS. No one is going to wait a month to give the pacifier to a breastfed baby
when it comes as part of the hospital discharge information. Just watch how
quickly pacifiers will start to appear in commercial discharge bags and pacifier
manufacturers will make millions off of this. It is interesting how both
formula manufacturers and pacifier makers provide so much financial support for
SIDS organizations who used 2 of the 5 SIDS committee members as speakers at
their conference.

The Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition has a well referenced statement on
this policy that can be found at _www.massbfc.org_ (http://www.massbfc.org) .
Hopefully we will see an article in Newsweek that refutes some of the
inaccuracies and hazards contained in this unfortunate proclamation from the AAP.
