I have to jump in here and give my opinion about this issue. I think
Kathryn's points are well taken and that we must view the starting solids
issue on a baby by baby basis. I do think it is true that babies should
receive nothing but breastmilk for the first six months of life, but I also
think that breastmilk is more than adequate nutrition and should remain the
major source of calories for the baby fro the second six months of the first
year. I do not think that a baby should receive supplemental iron on a whim
because of its ability to compromise the protective benefits of breastmilk
and may compromise gut integrity.

Babies show signs of readiness for solids. Solids given in the first year
appear to be more of a social event rather than a nutritional one, generally
speaking. Now, there are babies who need solids. I question the former WHP
guidelines of 4-6 months in any country.

This is all coming from my gut, and I hope that more and better research
becomes available soon. This issue of solids seems to be fast becoming a
highly controversial topic. I would like to hear from others regarding this
issue.
