The LC's at our hospital sees all bfing moms. However, there are some days
when we just can't get everyone so we put them at the top of the list for the
next day. We give priorities to MD ordered consults, and those that the
nurses note that are experiencing difficulties. We also see discharges first
thing in the morning of discharge. We also see moms and babies in the NICU,
PICU, Peds, Peds ED, Adult Ed, and the pediatrics clinics-everywhere in the
hospital where a bfing mom may be found. Occasionally it will be in day
surgery, and even cardiology. Don't know how we do it all. Just do triage and
do the worst cases first and then work back, responding to pages as needed.
We are now trying to see out patient consults in the evening when things calm
down. Also, in the evening, it is easier for Dad to bring mom in for a
consult. We work 7 days a week with some days having an evening LC on staff.

Barb Whitehead, BS, IBCLC
Eastern NC (Had a great experience yesterday. I presented a 3 hour class on
Breastfeeding as a Public Health Issue to Community Health students at the
local university. They were so eager to learn, with lots of questions. Two
students stayed after class to ask how to become an IBCLC and one wants to do
an internship with me!)
