There has been a number of questions about MCT's with posts about either
denying infants breastmilk or removing the fat and adding MCTs because of
various metabolic deficiencies or health reasons. I am really confused and I
hope some of you nutritionists can explain something to me. Udo Eramus who
has a PhD in Nutrition, wrote a book called, "Fats that Heal, Fats that
Kill." He states on page 308 that "MCTs are an industrial invention with some
therapeutic benefits." MCTs are a by-product of fractionation used to
separate lauric and myristic acid-rich fractions from these oils for use in
margarines [talking about coconut and palm kernel oils]. He states that
"MCTs contain neither EFAs nor other essential nutrients. They are not a
required part of a natural diet."

So what we are we doing? We are taking away the perfect substance, the gold
standard as some say, to replace it with a product that can only exist cause
a man made it? Made from tropical oils???He says this substance does not
exist in concentrated form in nature. He states an excess of MCTs can have
negative effects: ketosis, ties up albumin protein that is necessary for
transport functions such as vit E, amino acids, etc.

I guess these babies are going to die without MCTs or some company is going
to die if we don't buy them. This really gets me. I hope someone can give me
a rational explanation for denying babies the whole product and
process...breastfeeding in regard to this situation. Valerie W. McClain,
IBCLC
