My husband is an associate professor of computer
science at the University of colorado. see
http://systems.cs.colorado.edu/grunwald/ That's Dirk.
 :-)

the issue of pumping at work has come up a couple of
times now; most recently because the secretary to the
chair is due with her 2nd child in January. I asked
Dirk if she was going to be able to pump, and he
responded that he didn't know, and wasn't going to ask
due to "sexual harrassment issues." I don't think he
perceives the issue as harrassment, but worries that
others might. (In fact, he discussed our appearance
on dr phil with staff members, and has had students or
staff call me with lactation issues.)

I intend to email Stephanie and ask if she has any
pumping questions, offering help if she needs it,
letting her know when local LLL meetings are, etc.....
that isn't a problem. But- IMNSHO, if breastfeeding
is perceived as a "bodily function" issue and not as a
"baby raising" issue, we will never see women feeling
comfortable bringing up their need to breastfeed and
pump............ I think that it should be a
non-issue, actually, but until then, I hope that women
can at least *mention* their needs to their
supervisor... and yes, the chair will be *fine* with
it... but I hate the idea that it can't be even
mentioned by faculty members.

there are several faculty and adjunct faculty who
bring their young children to work regularly. It is a
very child friendly department; in fact, they wish
dirk would bring our son in more often. :-)

thoughts? Dirk may be chair someday in the not so
distant future, so this may be a very real issue for him.
