Dear Mary Kay,

The Haberman does not require sucking, which is exactly why it works so well for cleft babies. The Haberman releases fluid when the "nipple" area is compressed by the baby's tongue/gums. Flow is regulated by rotating the nipple - markings indicate the amount of flow from zero to the max. Mom can also help if necessary by applying additional pressure to the nipple. You might want to get ahold of one of these devices so that you can better understand how they work and when they might be appropriate for use by certain babies who are unable to suckle effectively.

Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
