My second child had a swollen breast at about two years of age. When I went to pick him up one day he screamed when my fingers touched it. I found a swollen, red, very tender lump under his nipple/areola. Eventually there was a black discharge from the nipple and a red patch, significant in size, on his chest. The pediatrician was as confused as I was, measured and outlined the red area (so we'd know if it got larger), and determined it was "definitely infected." He went on an antibiotics for the first time in his life and later saw a surgeon who said leave it alone. She also said the lump may take a LONG time to go away or may not ever go away completely. It was sore for some time but I think it did go away completley. No one ever determined the cause and oddly enough, no one ever explored any relation to our breastfeeding.
Hope you discover more than I did on this!
