This is for Mandy Frost's posting regarding severe Diaper Rash. My son was
in a similar situation with the world's longest case of diaper rash. We used
Pampers, cloth diapers which we had water and soap testing with the diaper
service, we did our own diapers, no diapers worked when we could, but the bottom
line was until he was potty trained he had the rash. I had the biggest tubes
of Balmex, Diaprene, Destin, and Mycolog I had ever seen. I tried teas,
powders, lotions, notions and nothing. Not one single thing helped this kid's butt.
It was 27 years ago so butt balm from NICU was not around. He cried, I cried,
we all cried. But I kept BF. Actually after reading about using EBM for
burns, I might be tempted to express some milk and let it air dry. But I
wouldn't give up breastfeeding.
Now what I have learned in 27 years with this kid is he has very sensitive
skin. He gets rashes and has the white spots that occur when he is too moist
from no matter what. When he was just out of high school he was a life guard
for 2 summers and guess what he was "wet" again almost like as a baby and he had
issues again. He used Lotrimin on the area and it worked a bit...but we
added Caladryl and Balmex and made up a butt balm that got him through the
season...
Sounds like baby needs breastmilk to help to protect his immune system...and
a barrier for his hiney. Has Mom explored her diet?
We used white vinegar in last rinse cycle of his clothes to help remove any
soap residue and bathed him in Dove soap when really little. A friend told me
her friend who was a physician recommends Head and Shoulders for older
children.
Good luck
