Kelly quoted a couple she cared for: "There is a lactation consultant
on staff however, she only works every other day and has been out for
some reason over the past few days. We only saw her on Thursday and
none of the other nurses seem to be able to help."

It reminds me of the discussion we had a week or so ago about having
a dentist and an oral hygienist.

In the hospital situation there's the obstetrician and a midwife or
an obstetric nurse. During labor a good midwife/obstetric nurse will
do all s/he can to keep everything progressing normally, and it's a
great skill. Should a problem arise the obstetrician is called in.

That's the relationship I'd like to see us have with hospital
nurses/midwives. If LCs only have limited time available that time is
much more productively spent in teaching midwives and obstetric
nurses how to keep everything progressing normally. Just as it isn't
feasible, or desirable, for every woman to have her own LC at home so
it should be in hospital.

Denise
