Dear Friends:
I am working with a mother whose baby won't latch. At the visit, the
mother and baby did lots of different things. She fed EBM via bottle to calm
the baby, she pumped about 3 ounces of milk, and then, the baby did go to
breast and nursed like a champ while mom lay in bed. I have been following
them by telephone.
Mom has developed a new set of problems which seem to be related to
breast swelling. Her nipples are very large; she was able to pump with the
standard Hollister kit a few days ago, but now she can't. Her husband was to
come to my office and pick up a larger flange set up last night. He never
came.
She called me last night. He doesn't want to come and get the stuff. He
doesn't want to pay for it. He is sick of all this breastfeeding stuff, and
there are no guarantees that if she gets this larger set-up that things will
be fine. In the meantime, his poor wife is suffering. I have her hand
expressing and leaning forward into a warm water bath but she can't collect
enough milk that way yet so baby is receiving breastmilk substitutes and
vomiting.
What a terrible mess! I am so helpless. She is going to try and get the
money from somewhere and I will deliver the set-up to her.
     Just venting.
     Warmly,
