After a birth in water, when baby and mother are immersed together, the
mother and baby are both nicely rinsed free of blood as mother climbs out of
the tub with the baby, while being simultaneously completely covered in one
another's gunk from their sharing the water. (There's a reason you don't
see a lot of color photos of waterbirths!) Not an option for anyone with a
hypersensitive yuck reflex, but then, is parenthood an option for them at
all? Mother and baby and anyone else within splashing distance will smell
like birth until they are washed in soap, no rush for that. Vernix survives
the birthing pool just fine. Baby stays on mother's body, temperature is
never a problem. If the water has done the trick of making any other
analgesia unnecessary, mother and baby are primed to start breastfeeding and
everyone's happy, esp the IBCLC/midwife grandmother. Highly recommended :-)
