Jane, we are going through many changes at work - many positive, such as
plenty of skin-to-skin (6 hours minimum).

We are seriously trying to minimise the confusion and anxiety caused by
staff members saying different things to mothers. Quite a challenge as we
often have to buy in staff due to shortages of permanent staff in our unit.
We also have some folk who have been there for many years and are resistant
to change.

Having some clear handouts available for mothers - addressing common
questions/concerns of the first few days - can serve as an example of how
to address some issues. This has not been as useful as I would have hoped
as staff read them once and then over time go back to what they have been
saying for years.

I don't believe one can put words into another person's mouth. One needs to
understand WHY you are saying something. However, we have been discussing
communication and how important it is that our message is clear. This has
led to some asking me what I say when......... Helpful discussions have
resulted from this - we are only beginning!!

Example is a great way to learn - and having a staff member observe how you
work with a mother/baby pair is important.

My few cents....
