For the ambivalent twin mother struggling with an SNS:

I find myself increasingly disillusioned with feeding tubes for most of my
population. Even mothers who are excited about the idea often seem to wear
thin pretty quickly, are relieved to switch to bottles for supplements, and
go on to nurse well even so.

I like the SNS for babies who are objecting to the breast because of low
supply. It's a wonderful way of saying, "Nonsense! This breast is
*brimming* with food!" But for the baby who nurses willingly, or for the
mom with marginal commitment, most of the mothers I work with find a bottle
easier. I know it's not ideal to have baby spending sucking time away from
breast, and if it were I, I'd go with a feeding tube, but whatever allows a
mother to nurse *indefinitely and happily* seems to me to be what we're
after.

It sounds as if these twins latch and nurse, but mom doesn't have a full
supply, is that right? Perhaps she could be persuaded to keep nursing if
all she had to do was put the babies to breast. Maybe she'd even do it more
often, increasing her supply faster than she would if she had to slog
through formal SNS nursings that she stretched to longer and longer
intervals.

My latest success story is a woman who felt utterly defeated by the SNS at
about a month. Indeed, it was the last straw and actually caused her to
quit breastfeeding. But a few hours into her decision to wean, her baby
*insisted* on breastfeeding... and they're now happily nursing with
supplemental bottles at 3 1/2 months.
