There are a few really good web sites to familiarize ourselves with
different carriers and some traditional ones as well.
I think that teaching a mom  or any parent to hold baby close is a big
step in encouraging them to want to continue nursing. Esp. if they are
just stopping  for selfish reasons.
There is a primal instinct to nurture our children at our breasts, Esp.
if a little baby is close to the breast area and searching for  said
nourishment.
Also  holding baby close in a sling or like carrier in a Hospital will
encourage some nurses to stay away if they don't hear baby crying and
see that baby is obviously being comforted and satisfied at the breast.
And then there is are   pre term babies and the  NICU. I wonder that  if
more women were encouraged to hold baby close (some are I know but here
in Windsor most moms of babies that are born preterm or end up in the
NICU are discouraged from holding and bonding, and I just say this
generally- there ARE some good nurses in the NICU that DO encourage
touching.)that they wouldn't stick out nursing against all odds, and
against those other more aggressive and formula pushing nurses.
Anyway- I have trailed off.
Here are some sources for some carrier sites, www.thebabywearer.com  it
is a site that has carrier reviews of all of the slings out there, and
support to moms that need more help with them. And another is
www.mamatoto.org it is a non profit organization that shows traditional
carriers(from different cultures) and how to even use a bed sheet as a
carrier. it has step by step directions and it a great resource to have.
Who knows, maybe if some breastfeeding educators and LC knew how to help
some moms to nurse discreetly, more moms wouldn't feel so "tied
down"(ugh) by nursing their baby if they knew they could do so publicly-
and no one would know.
