It sounds as if this mom has a very common problem, which usually does resolve by about 6 weeks or so,but not always. Plugged milk ducts are one of the nuisances of early breast feeding and I think a good double electric pump might help for mom to use any time she feels one of those areas becomming full and tender. I disagree with the doc about time limits however. The baby should be the best pump and I would let the baby go a nice long time on the most afftected side and use the pump only when the baby will take no more and there is still fullness. Increasing fluids, more rest for mom and Karen Pryor's (1991 edition) Nursing your Baby for a nice warm "You can get through this" also might help. Good luck. tracy throckmorton rn ibclc
