Hi. I am working with a mother that just delivered less than 24 hours ago. Her nipples are very sore after just breastfeeding 2 times. They look strange. They have white areas that are peeling off and the skin under is red and irritated. They look like what a yeast infection would look like if it was not treated for a long period of time. Mom stated she had very sore and cracked, bleeding nipples with her first baby so she began exclusively pumping up to 4 months. She said her nipples got better with pumping but never completely healed and they continued to be sore. After she stoped pumping, the pain went away but her nipples never fully healed. Even her husband stated they have never been the same. There is 2 years between babies. Is it possible to have an underlying yeast or bacterial infection for 2 years and have it "resurface" with a new baby? I am just not sure what we should use to treat her nipples--APNO? something for yeast? or is it bacterial? Any suggestions? Thanks!!
