I have also noticed this phenonmenon.

In our neighborhood many years ago the mother of a small baby was outside
because he "wouldn't stop screaming." He could be heard outdoors. It was a
heartbreaking sound. When I asked what she thought the problem was she
replied that he had had "an other" bout of the stomach flu (he was about 5
months old and totally FF) and she was going to keep him on nothing but
Pedialyte until he stopped having those pesky loose stools this time! He
had had nothing but Pedialyte for 4 or 5 days. In a controlled panic, I
strongly suggested that she contact her ped and ask him if this was the
best course of action. She did and was upset that the ped "yelled" at her
for not feeding the baby. I was upset that that poor child went that long
without food. *sigh* I am sure my intervention in this situation was
chalked up to being the "neighborhood fanatic." At least the child got
fed....This is NOT an isolated incident.
