Thank you so much for bringing Dr. Meek's response to the attention of
LN. I have been distressed by the accusations which have been aimed at
the authors. As in the case of Nursing Mother's Companion, once an
author signs over rights to a book it is out of their hands. When
written under the auspices of an organization, I suspect it is the
organization that has the power to determine what happens to it, not the
authors.

I don't agree with the suggestion that the book must be soft on formula
or Ross wouldn't have been interested. I believe they (Ross) are
counting on the presence of their logo and it's implied endorsement by
AAP being a stronger influence on moms' decisions down the line than
anything the book may say about the inadvisability of using formula!

As to the suggestion that hospitals buy a bunch and distribute them
before Ross tries to get them to distribute the book. If only that were
possible. Unfortunalely, the cost rears its ugly head. Unless a
hospital has some kind of "baby friendly grant" to cover the cost this
just isn't going to happen!

The canned response people have been getting from AAP seems ti indicate
that that is a blind alley. Maybe the suggestion of getting media
publicity is more viable. Anyone with a good media contact want to
tackle that approach?

Winnie
