Received a call today from a mom who weaned her healthy twins after 11
months of successful breastfeeding. Mom weaned the twins completely 3-4
weeks ago and 4 days ago noticed a 2-3cm lump in one of her breasts, which
was tender to the touch. (No redness or warmth, afebrile.) She was
concerned about the sudden onset and did see her primary care provider
today. An ultrasound was performed to rule out a mass or cyst. Ultrasound
reported "enlarged ducts". She discussed with her provider breasfeeding
again to drain the area and her provider was concerned that it may just
happen again when she was ready to stop breastfeeding the next time. She
did not suffer from any blocked ducts or mastitis during her breasfeeding
experience. Mom was asking my thoughts on this. She did pump today and
easily obtained milk. In addition, she is fine about starting up again with
the breastfeeds.
I happen to work in a pediatric practice and have not encountered this. We
would love to draw on anyone's experience with a similar situation.
Thanks in advance,
Timi M. Schonhorn, FNP, IBCLC
