On the other hand I know a lot of WIC mothers who tell the WIC nutritionist
that feed the kids formula , but in realty breastfeed . They sell the
formula to buy food for the kids and for themselves . For many it makes the
difference between eating and going hungry. As a WIC participant myself I
think that there is not much that we can eat from what WIC offers . We do
not eat peanut butter , do not drink cow's milk or soy milk , can not digest
beans. We eat a lot of vegetables but WIC gives 24.00 a year to spend at the
farmer's market. We have 3 WIC participants in the house ,  you can not buy
enough to make even one dinner with this.
   I also have a big issue with WIC nutritionists . A lot of times it is
nice well meaning people , but just this Monday I overheard one of them
giving a class to a group of Middle Eastern ladyes . The first thing that
was brought up was wholewheat bread and how all of them should be eating it.
The  idea is nice , but people from that ethnicity carry a strong
possibility of Celiak desice and general gluten intolerance , if it is the
case , than they should not have the wholewheat bread at all. The
nutritionist made no warning about it . In another instants I got really
sick when my youngest was 4 weeks old . I needed a blood transfusion and a
lot of tests that required general anaesthesia. When I told the nutritionist
that I needed to supplement for a while a got a sermon and a lot of threats
about what would happen to my baby if I was "lazy" and did not breastfeed.
  Some one rightly said that WIC is pushing the dep. of Agriculture program
, so if mothers want to feed they're kids other things that are the ones
being promoted they are out of luck. For instance i can not get Goat milk
even if that is what we drink . I was told that there is a possibility , but
it is very difficult , and WIC only gives one brand - not a kosher one - so
it is not an option for me anyway. But one can buy any kind of cow's milk -
what is the difference ?
  I am not trying to blame or upset people who work for WIC and try to do
the best in the system that is not good. I just wanted to explain how it
looks from the other side .
