I love this discussion on breastfeeding behavior being seen as "using mom as
a pacifier." One of my favorite lines, followed by discussion of baby's and
mom's need for breast time, oral structural changes, and handing out Linda
Smith's "Top Ten Reasons for Not Using a Pacifier," is asking parents if they're
aware of what a pacifier is called in other parts of the world...a dummy. This
usually lights the bulb of understanding.

I also just started giving moms a handout I made using quotes from James
McKenna's presentation which begins with, " A mother is the environment for her
baby..." I feel this is a very powerful statement but usually needs lots of
further explanation as to how this concept is so foreign in our culture, but why
skin contact and holding baby is what he is born to expect no matter what
culture he is born into.

Another favorite saying I use with moms in support group who jiggle, and
sush, and wait unbearably long to allow baby the breast is, "When in doubt whip it
out." I always preface this with an acknowledgement that it's a bit of a
crude saying as in the past it seemed to offend a mom or two. (This saying is
not mine, heard it, read it somewhere).
