I got a call from a local MD the other day (I helped her bf her twins last
year) who told me about a case she had. The mom never seemed to develop any
milk after birth. No retained placental fragments. At one week post-partum
her breasts looked like "empty sacks". Her doctor told her to wean because
"she wasn't eating a good enough diet to produce milk". My MD friend
recently saw this mom at 5 mos postpartum for a health problem and diagnosed
her as having adrenal insufficiency. She asked me if this could have caused
the lack of milk production. My gut reaction is yes, but I need some solid
references for her, which she would like to give to the other MD involved in
this mom's care. I couldn't find anything in Riordan/Auerbach or Lawrence.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also: got a call from an LC in the area re a new mom who was put on IV
prednisone in the hospital. My references only refer to oral predinisone.
Any problem with nursing a baby while on IV predinisone? I don't know the
dose.
Thanks!
