Dear Friends:
A family called me to inquire about renting a pump, as their baby is
detained in the intensive care nursery. I told them what the cost was, and a
nurse from the hospital came into the conversation, saying that this was a poor
family and that WIC would supply a pump..............but the WIC office is
closed until Monday so they would have to wait. I suggested teaching the mother
how to hand express, saying that it is easier than driving a car. The nurse
was dumfounded, saying "how do you do that?" Fortunately, the lactation
consultant is coming to work soon, and the nurse will ask her about it.
Hands came before pumps, don't cost anything, are always available and
once a mother learns the skill, she can do very well. How sad that there is so
much reliance on technology. Women have told me that their obstetrician
would send them for an ultrasound to determine the baby's position, because no
one knows how to do Leopold maneuvers anymore.
    warmly,
