Judy,
Chele Marmet talks about a phenomena she calls "rusty pipe" syndrome. To
quote from Marmet & Shell's LACTATION FORMS: A guide to lactation
consultant chartings: "The milk may also be tinged a red to rust color so
that it looks as if there is blood in the milk. This may be unilateral or
bilateral, prenatal or during early lactation. Usually this secretion
looks rusty and consequently we've labeled it "rusty pipe" syndrome.
According to a study by O'Callaghan (1981) the 'discharge appears to be
associated with the initiattion of the lactation process and
spontaneously ceases with its establishement.' There were no apparent ill
effects on the breastfeeding infants. This condition is well known in the
dairy industry. Herdsmen report that this is just part of the start-up in
the production of milk in a small percentage of cattle and is frequently
linked to an injury or extreme engorgement."
Hope this puts concerns to rest. If you want to know more, you can call
the Lactation Institute and ask to speak with Chele or Ellen.
-Lisa
