"I would not recommend that parents use their fingers in place of the baby's
need to eat but it does have a place for the disorganized suck and calming."

I use this method frequently and it works. And sometimes, I find that
letting a baby suck on my finger will 'wake-up' their mouths so that sucking
becomes a desire for that moment. I teach parents to use it also. Many of
our babies come into the world, perhaps too druged(dare I say?),to suck
correctly and the more time they have to metabolise the drugs and work
through their need to rest, the better they become, on an hourly basis, it
seems, with sucking. This is very frustrating since many nurses want babies
to eat every 3-5 hrs. I have to juggle the worry about hydration and
alternative feeding methods with the need for babies with good blood sugars
to rest until they want to eat.
