 Hi All again
Sorry about sending an incomplete post with out signing or doing spell
check. My cat walked across the keyboard - pushing him off only made the
problem worse!
I wanted to add that where I work - with the epidural rate @ 90% and most
moms having stadol, we have many, many low blood sugar babies. We also have
a high c-sec rate and at our hospital, we often keep the babies separated 8
hours or more before the first feed. Our nurses are often in a hurry to
give formula. We work hard at trying to get baby breastfeeding any way we
can and that may include using a shield. I sure would like to only use them
in extreme circumstances, but it just doesn't always work that way.
Thankfully, by having a clinic, we can do a lot of intense follow-up.
An example of what goes on here was evident today. I worked yesterday
with a baby with a complete midline cleft palate and lip. I got him on the
breast and he was feeding beautifully. Today when I came in, one of the
nurses was syringe feeding him formula. She was convinced he was hungry
(voids and stools were fine, frequency of feeds too) She fed him while he
was lying on her lap with the syringe in his mouth, not waiting for
swallows. Luckily, baby did fine, but I was so discouraged!
The Lactnet discussions have been so interesting lately! Thanks for all
of you who take the time to write and to list mothers who take time to
volunteer! Judith Markham IBCLC
